While completing Macquarie’s Winter Development Program in 2021, Kate Wiseman discovered that a career in finance was more than just crunching numbers. She is now an Analyst in Macquarie Capital and is motivated by the impact she can have on her team and for her clients.
I enjoyed maths and chose to study a Bachelor of Applied Finance and Economics in Brisbane. A career in the industry sounded interesting, but I didn’t know where to begin. That’s when I heard about Macquarie Capital’s Winter Development Program for STEM and students who are women in their penultimate year of study.
I completed the three-week internship with the Critical Minerals and Energy (CME) team. It was fun and exciting, and I got involved in real pitches and transactions. I especially liked how dynamic and relevant finance is – things move quickly and what you do really has a broader impact.
After completing the Program, I was invited to complete the three-month Summer Internship in Sydney with the same team. Then I was excited to accept an offer to join Macquarie Capital’s Graduate Program with the Technology, Media, Entertainment and Telecommunications (TMET) team in 2023.
I knew I wanted to stay with Macquarie because of the people. There were so many knowledgeable individuals from different backgrounds with unique perspectives. From the first day that I joined Macquarie as a Winter Intern, they were all incredibly supportive and always willing to lend a helping hand.
Every day is different. As an Analyst I build and run financial models, and also craft messaging by translating numbers into pitches and discussion materials.
It requires numerical skills, but communication is a very important part of the job - in Macquarie Capital our role is advisory, and I spend a lot of time working directly with clients or telling their story.
I am the most junior person in the team but my opinion is valued and the work I do is taken seriously.
During my first year, I worked on several different transactions. I love that we get very involved with our client’s company, working directly with the CEO and CFO on their business strategy.
Taking the leap to join Macquarie’s Winter Development Program helped me discover that there is more to finance than just crunching numbers.
You’re supported to learn the technical skills for your role as well as gain valuable experience in speaking up, crafting a pitch and communicating ideas, which gives me confidence in my work.
As a graduate or intern, you’re also assigned a buddy for day-to-day advice, as well as a mentor at manager level. That formalised support structure is very helpful. But the whole team is supportive and always happy to help.
At Macquarie the whole business works as one big team. While I’m with Macquarie Capital I have worked with our Macquarie Asset Management, Commodities and Global Markets and Banking and Financial Services businesses. Macquarie is a diverse organisation, and we have exposure across business lines.
I've learned a lot, but I still have so much more to learn. I feel that anything is possible and there are lots of opportunities within Macquarie Capital, whether that’s moving across sectors, teams or even borders.
There are also so many incredible women in senior positions in Macquarie Capital. I feel inspired by what they have achieved, and I know that’s possible for my career too.
Embrace opportunities to build your practical experience. I learnt so much over three weeks on the Winter Development Program. It really was the catalyst for my career in the industry and helped me better understand my strengths and interests.
There is so much to take in, and the time goes so much faster than you could expect so leap on every opportunity and get to know everyone, because networks are important.
