Message from Shemara Wikramanayake – Chair, Macquarie Group Foundation

The Macquarie Group Foundation’s community investment strategy is threefold: to encourage and support Macquarie staff to give back to the communities where they live and work, to strengthen the impact of non-profit organisations by funding capacity building and collaboration and to support social innovation.

In the 12 months ending 31 March 2017, the Macquarie Group Foundation and Macquarie staff globally contributed $A29.4 million to 1,350 non-profit organisations, as well as giving approximately 50,000 hours of their time.

    Our people

How staff in Australia have supported the community over the year:

We’ve provided pro bono assistance to organisations supporting a range of causes, from the homeless to Indigenous university students.

We’ve matched staff fundraising for grant partners working in youth mental health, brain cancer research and the disadvantaged.

We’ve volunteered to help out by reading to children and selling The Big Issue magazine.

We’ve provided career development assistance to university students and migrant graduates through.

How staff in the Americas have supported the community over the year:

We’ve arranged for staff to provide significant pro bono assistance to non-profits we partner with in New York and Houston.

We’ve matched staff fundraising for a Houston non-profit that supports fostered youth, a Jacksonville organisation working with local veterans and a Quebec charity assisting rural Canadians with cancer.

We’ve hosted a holiday party for children who might not otherwise receive festive treats in New York.

We’ve supported staff involved in mentoring high school and college students in New York.

How staff in Asia have supported the community over the year:

We’ve matched staff fundraising for schools in disadvantaged areas in the Philippines and Cambodia, supported staff volunteering to help refugees in Hong Kong.

We’ve mentored high school and college students in Hong Kong, enhanced the skills of underemployed and unemployed migrants in Gurugram and provided paid internships to university students from slum communities in Delhi.

We’ve organised for staff in Singapore to use their skills to help combat modern slavery and collaborated in an intensive director training program to help staff leverage their expertise on non-profit boards in Hong Kong.

Our work against modern slavery across Asia has also supported the publication of a research report into the issue.

How staff in EMEA have supported the community over the year:

In London, we support staff who mentor high school students, invite young people to our offices for an insight into corporate life, and host code clubs to boost students’ tech skills.

We support organisations that focus on social mobility and aim to prepare young people for the business world through internships and apprenticeships, including providing roles at Macquarie.

We encourage our staff to provide pro bono expertise to charity through our CoRe (Community Resourcing) program.

We match fundraising to alleviate hunger and food waste by staff in our South African offices, providing services to the visually impaired or people with autism in our Dublin office and to support children living in slums in Sao Paolo by staff in our Munich office.
