How to effectively use AI in our recruitment process

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping many aspects of how we interact with the world around us every day. This includes candidates, perhaps like yourself, who choose to use AI in parts of their job search.

Here’s how you can make the most of AI through our recruitment process.

Our recruitment approach

At Macquarie, we value the unique perspectives that our people bring. That’s why we’ve designed our recruitment process to get to know you – your skills, aspirations, and experiences.

Our recruiters and hiring managers consider each application holistically. This means our recruiters review your application, your psychometric assessment results, consider your responses to interview questions, and make selections. Hiring decisions are based on you as a person and not an algorithm.

Applications:

Each application is evaluated with an understanding of the unique contributions and nuances that make you – the candidate – stand out. Our approach allows us to consider not just your skills and experiences but also your potential for growth and contribution to our team.

Interviews:

We encourage you to come in for at least one in-person interview. The interview process offers an opportunity to start building a relationship with potential future colleagues. Our approach fosters a sense of connection from the outset, setting the foundation for a positive and engaging work environment.

Human interaction through face-to-face interviews is highly valued and enables our hiring managers to observe and evaluate soft skills and non-verbal cues, such as communication style, adaptability, collaboration and leadership potential.

Selection:

Our managers and recruitment teams make the final hiring decisions. We adopt a contextual approach, looking at all aspects of your application. Teams consider various factors, adapting to new information and making complex decisions, that best serve both your needs and Macquarie's.

AI as a supplement, not a substitute

While AI offers remarkable capabilities, it’s important to view it as an enhancement to your application. Remember, AI is no substitute for you.

Let’s take a look at how you can use AI through the lens of our principles - opportunity, accountability and integrity. These principles continue to be integral to our purpose, how we operate and is what sets our employees apart.

We encourage you to consider ways you could embody these principles throughout the recruitment process.

Opportunity:

AI presents an enormous opportunity for our business and for you. We welcome candidates who can effectively use AI to enhance creativity and drive efficiency within our business. It also opens up possibilities for you as you prepare for the recruitment process with Macquarie.

You might leverage AI to tailor your summary or objective on your CV/resume by embedding information specific to Macquarie or the role you are applying for. This personal touch can make a big difference in showing our recruiters that you’ve done your research – but make sure you make it personal to your interests, experience, and unique tone of voice to stand out from others also using AI.

Embracing AI to understand what the position might entail, more about Macquarie, and other aspects of working here is great but remember that AI might not fully grasp nuance, leading to advice or responses that don’t align well. Use AI as a starting point, but also seek out human perspectives through networking, attending Macquarie events, informational interviews, and reading first-hand accounts from employees, like the stories on our people blog.

If you are still early in your career journey, you might also take the opportunity to ask AI to suggest online courses, certifications or reading materials to help you close any skill gaps you might have based on the job requirements. This demonstrates your initiative to grow and learn, making your application more competitive.

Accountability:

AI tools can rapidly analyse vast amounts of data about Macquarie, industry trends, and job roles to suggest insightful questions and generate potential responses. However, accountability means that you tailor these AI-generated responses based on your own experiences and skills. This avoids over-dependence on AI which could leave you unprepared for real-world scenarios and your interview.

To set yourself apart from the pack, balance the use of AI with traditional preparation methods. Develop your own insights, trust your judgement and engage actively with interviewers for more authentic interactions. Avoid over-preparing with AI to maintain spontaneity and demonstrate your ability to think on your feet.

Lastly, attention to detail is crucial. Use AI writing assistants to ensure your application is error-free and professional. Preparation is essential, as AI won’t always be available to assist.

Integrity:

While AI can significantly enhance interview preparation, it's essential to use these tools wisely. Maintaining integrity involves ensuring authenticity in your responses, accurately representing your skills, and respecting ethical boundaries. Balancing AI's capabilities with a personal touch and ethical considerations will help you present yourself as a compelling, genuine candidate. For example, it is unwise to read a response generated using AI during your online or video interview and is often noticed by our interviewers and recruiters.

AI tools might suggest using certain jargon or highlighting skills in a way that doesn't accurately reflect your true capabilities.  It's important to be honest and only claim skills and experiences that you genuinely possess. Misrepresenting your abilities could result in being hired into a role which may not suit you which in turn could lead to difficulties performing the role potentially damaging your credibility.  Accurately representing your abilities and experiences is important.

We want to see that you've done your research. You can demonstrate this by exploring our website and social media channels including our thought leadership content. You may choose to leverage AI to help develop your commercial awareness and build your knowledge, but make sure you share your opinions and views. We want to hear what you have to say.

It's okay to admit when you don't know something. Being open about your knowledge and experience or how you've tackled difficulties can add depth to your responses and showcases your willingness to learn and adapt.

Key takeaways

Using AI responsibly and demonstrating your unique skills and experiences throughout the recruitment process could be key to your success. Whilst AI tools may help you enhance or elevate your application, they are not a substitute for your unique voice and perspective.
