    Location Taiwan

    Opportunity

Taiwan aims to increase electricity generated from renewable power from 8.3 per cent in 20221 to 60-70 per cent in 2050.2 The country’s offshore wind capacity is currently nearly 1.6 GW,3 with an interim target of 13.1 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 with the aim of reaching 40-55 GW by 2050.4

    Approach

Macquarie acquired a 50 per cent stake in Formosa 1 to develop Taiwan's first offshore wind farm and help kick-start the island's supply of offshore wind-generated power. The investment in Formosa 1 was followed by a further portfolio of approximately 2 GW5 of offshore wind in Taiwan, developed by Macquarie's portfolio company, Corio Generation.

    Outcome

Formosa 1 was a first-of-its-kind project in Taiwan.

It was the first operational offshore wind farm in Taiwan6 and one of three landmark demonstration incentive projects approved by the Taiwan Government to promote offshore wind development in the region. Formosa 1 started its operations in December 2019.
