Q&A with Sarah Goodheart: Embracing a risk mindset through the Graduate Program

21 October 2024

Sarah Goodheart joined Macquarie’s Graduate Program in 2023 and is currently an Associate on the Credit team within the Risk Management Group. Her team evaluates and approves material credit risk, analyses significant transactions and initiatives, and assesses the strengths and weaknesses of these transactions before presenting their recommendations to Macquarie’s senior management.

What inspired you to pursue a career in finance at Macquarie?

Macquarie’s Risk Management Group (RMG) has a unique approach to risk culture that I sought to experience first-hand. Across the organisation, teams rely on RMG to provide guidance, assist them in making informed decisions, and help drive positive outcomes. This dynamic allows us to proactively identify risk, which speaks to the strength of the frameworks in place across the firm.

In my role, feeling empowered to make decisions means not only understanding Macquarie’s operating principles, but also earning the trust of my colleagues. With the support of my team, as well as a global network of like-minded people, I know my opinions are valued and welcomed.

How does Macquarie invest in your career? How are you encouraged to invest in yourself?

Macquarie places a strong emphasis on career development throughout its Graduate Program. I was given the opportunity for a credit-specific training in Sydney this past Spring, which allowed me to connect with peers globally, broaden my understanding of the roles within RMG, and introduced me to a variety of perspectives that enriched my learning experience. This opportunity showcased Macquarie’s clear commitment to the professional growth of all its employees.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Attention to detail is an essential part of my day-to-day tasks, so it’s important to stay organised and effectively communicate with my colleagues. I approach every deal, project and transaction with a sense of ownership and a willingness to learn.

Macquarie’s supportive culture provides all new starters with the strong foundation they need to succeed.

What advice would you have for students looking to pursue a career in finance?

It’s important to keep an open mind. There are so many opportunities available that may not seem like ‘traditional’ finance roles, many of which are interesting positions that have measurable impact. Take advantage of every resource —don’t be afraid to reach out to people and ask about their experiences and guidance.
