Joshua Godosky joined the Graduate Program in 2022 and is an Associate for the Real Estate team in Macquarie Asset Management. His team focuses on evaluating new investments, deal sourcing, and strategising how to create more scalable and efficient growth.
My interest in finance began while studying economics in college. While much of my curriculum was highly theoretical, I sought practical experience in the field through an internship with a small private equity firm. After graduation, I was keen to continue my career at Macquarie Asset Management (MAM) where I could have the opportunity to deliver tangible positive impact. I was interested in being a part of MAM because of their resources, footprint, and the opportunity to gain exposure to diverse investments, geographies, and perspectives.
While no two days look the same, I spend most of my time evaluating new investments.
This includes creating and managing financial models, preparing investment committee decks, communicating with internal stakeholders and investors, and visiting the companies we are considering for investment. What makes this process so engaging is the chance to meet with prospective management partners and strategize on how we can scale their companies.
All team members are encouraged to have a voice to generate the best outcomes for our clients, partners, and communities. This includes proposing new investment opportunities, suggesting ways to improve our assets and portfolio companies, and finding efficiencies in our processes.
The Macquarie Graduate Program provides valuable group-wide and team-specific training during the initial weeks. The MAM team took the time to guide me through the projects I’d work on, provided additional modeling training, and taught me the industry-specific fundamentals. Macquarie fosters a strong sense of camaraderie, with colleagues consistently willing to provide the support needed for success.
At both the analyst and the associate levels, I have felt empowered to lead calls with brokers and bankers, actively engage in conversations with investors, and craft investment pitches, among other responsibilities. While these significant responsibilities were daunting at first early in my career, they have accelerated my growth, deepened my understanding of the investments we evaluate, and improved my ability to communicate on complex investments and sectors that I was previously unfamiliar with.
The people I interact with day-to-day are intelligent and eager to support my learning. My team is always available to field my questions and take the time to provide me with guidance. I am often given the opportunity to align my work with initiatives that match my career interests, such as looking at investment opportunities, increasing my exposure to real-estate sectors, and potential acquisitions of growth-stage developers and operators.
Macquarie encourages internal mobility, and their reach offers a diverse opportunity across the global organization. I know there are many chances for growth and advancement across MAM and the broader company.
I recommend getting involved in as much as you can during a summer internship. Participate in as many projects as possible and ask team members if you could join them on calls and meetings. Listening in on conversations with management teams and investors was one of the most valuable experiences I had during my internship.
