Ivy Tuvera: Carving her own unique path from operations to technology

Since joining Macquarie in 2017 as an Executive, Ivy Tuvera’s role and responsibility progressed rapidly with two promotions under her belt in six years. She started her career in operations and has recently moved into technology: a change she believes is testament to Macquarie’s commitment to empowering people to grow, evolve and redefine their capabilities.

Ivy Tuvera says Macquarie’s culture of learning and change suits her own growth mindset perfectly.

“I have an appetite for learning and enjoy a challenge,” she explains. “Macquarie has always supported my curiosity.”

“That’s allowed me to experience several different roles and teams over the six years I’ve been with the organisation.”

My career is testament to the fact that Macquarie empowers its people to adapt, evolve and redefine their capabilities.”

Seeking growth and opportunity at Macquarie

Ivy began her career in credit risk in a global financial services organisation before a colleague inspired her to apply to Macquarie.

“I heard that Macquarie was a changing organisation where you could get involved in different projects,” she explains. “I was very interested in experiencing as much as I could.”

In 2017, Ivy joined Macquarie’s Manila office as part of the Client Onboarding team within the Counterparty Lifecycle Management Operations.

“Counterparty Lifecycle Management Operations is a global team,” she explains. “It’s one of the first layers of defence for Macquarie, conducting Know Your Client (KYC) checks, understanding the risk and profile of the customer and/or counterparty."

“The team handles a wide range of institutional counterparties to support the different ventures and businesses of the organisation.”

Ivy’s hopes for exposure to new things were quickly realised.

“Just three months after joining Macquarie, I was able to get involved with an additional change management project that took me beyond my original role.”

This project also introduced her to what became a career passion: projects and technology.

“Initially, I was supposed to fill in for a week, but it was extended until I became a Business Analyst for the team, and then a Product Owner.”

Ivy continued to work on tech transformation projects ranging from system integration to data quality review. In 2020, she was promoted to a people manager role. More recently, Ivy spent two years working in the Data Quality team.

“Sometimes opportunities are presented to you - other times you have to make them yourself,” she says. “If you take them, and deliver, who knows where it can lead you?”

Discovering a passion for technology

In 2023, Ivy was promoted to senior manager, working as a Senior Business Analyst for transformational projects.

“I don’t have a tech background,” Ivy explains. “But it's all been driven by curiosity, learning, and always raising my hand to get involved.”

She has appreciated the chance to hone her skills and learn on-the-job, while also taking advantage of more formal training opportunities in people management, software, and courses in SQL and Alteryx data analytics.

Ivy enjoys the tangible, concrete nature of technology projects, as well as the collaborative team environment.

“I’m motivated by the fact that you can see something conceptual come to life and a new system or process start running,” she says. “There’s a sense of achievement when you see it working and addressing issues it is meant to resolve. You are changing and improving how things operate.”

“Moving from operations to technology is not very common,” Ivy acknowledges. “Building a wide network and reputation through projects and seeking out mentors helped.”

Ivy says Macquarie has shown confidence in her ability to grow, adapt and develop skills, and she is currently working on an automation project.

“Day-to-day I’m looking at processes, finding ways to automate or simplify, creating decision trees and workflows, and translating it into tech terms so it can be built,” she explains.

“We ask a lot of questions in order to come up with the right solution to a problem. New regulations need to be taken into account, alongside how the project will impact other processes and people, so there’s a lot of work with and across different teams.”

Career growth and mobility

Ivy says that her career growth and mobility have been the highlights of her time at Macquarie to date.

I’m still surprised at how my career has changed since joining in 2017. If there’s been an arc to my career at Macquarie, it’s been change.”

Ivy says her growth mindset, combined with Macquarie’s encouragement, has facilitated her career’s evolution.

“Macquarie and my managers have always supported me,” Ivy says. “I’ve been very fortunate that when I expressed interest in doing more technical work, I was given challenges to prove myself and problems to solve.”

“If you always try to keep learning, and dream big, you can look beyond what you currently do, expand your skills, and continue to grow, which is exciting,” she says.

“I’m always looking for the next step, even if it’s small.”
