Haseeb Waseem finds joy and inspiration in his work with our Credit Markets team and is proud of the impact he has as part of Macquarie’s Pride employee network group.
Haseeb gains enormous satisfaction from the fast-paced, dynamic work he performs in his role as a New York-based Senior Analyst in Credit Markets.
“I love seeing the impact of my work for the benefit of our clients,” he says. “I enjoy helping to identify their unique needs and delivering innovative financing solutions.”
The impact runs deeper than his formal role, he says, extending into his involvement as a member of the steering committee for Macquarie’s Pride employee network group (ENG).
“Macquarie’s Pride ENG may not be my direct line of work, but it is a very important aspect of working here,” explains Haseeb.
The employee network group supports lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning + (LGBTQ+) people and their allies in Macquarie’s workforce, promoting an equitable and inclusive environment. This includes organising events such as Macquarie’s Pride Month summer celebration which provides our people with opportunity to exchange ideas and build relationships. Next year, the team is looking forward to holding similar events on the terrace of our new Americas headquarters in New York.
Haseeb says he also enjoys collaborating with other Macquarie ENGs, including meeting and presenting to the Board of Macquarie Group at a roundtable event.
“It was wonderful to see the Board’s genuine commitment to fostering an inclusive culture in the way they were actively listening and engaging with us,” he explains.
Haseeb believes that his volunteer work with the Pride ENG has also fed back into and benefited his role in Credit Markets with tangible skills and experience.
Through the Pride ENG, I’ve gained experience in mentoring, developed organisational skills, and grown my ability to lead.”
These skills are then directly fed back into how I engage with others whether they be my team, wider colleagues or clients.”
With a unique degree, majoring in finance and minoring in AI and machine learning, Haseeb describes a career in finance as the perfect blend between the quantitative and qualitative.
“I get to tell the story behind the numbers” he explains.
What stood out to Haseeb while interviewing with different financial institutions was Macquarie’s people and culture.
“It’s been my experience that people at Macquarie have the best interests of the team and everyone else in mind. It’s collaborative, and there’s a collective sense of achievement. Everyone is kind and patient, no one is afraid to ask questions,” he says.
Beyond seeing these values in action, Haseeb sees Macquarie at the forefront of innovation.
“There are so many unique and bespoke products at Macquarie and the way we’re structured means we’re doing things others aren’t,” he says. “Innovation is encouraged.”
Working in Credit Markets, Haseem says what he enjoys most is working on high-volume, short-term deals that have big impact.
The Credit Markets team provides warehouse solutions, settlement solution financing and related trading to institutional clients globally and sits within Macquarie’s Commodities and Global Markets group.
Haseeb explains that in the simplest terms there are two parts of Credit Markets: settlement solutions, which has a short-term financing focus for credit funds and where he has spent most of his time; and portfolio solutions, which covers long-term financing across pools of credit assets.
Clients come to the Credit Markets team with a scenario, and we apply an existing structured solution that works for their specific needs or come up with new ways to innovate to help our client’s needs.”
“It's a good feeling, when you’ve established an ongoing relationship with a client, work hard and see the deal or funding go through providing the client with another tool they can use.” “I like helping people,” he says. “And I get inspired by the work that I do.”
In 2023, Haseeb was promoted to Senior Analyst, a role he says gives him enormous variety. This includes keeping up with lending news, managing new trade or funding requests, partnering with clients, undertaking due diligence, and running comparisons or risk assessments.
“What’s cool is the level of autonomy and empowerment I have to run a new opportunity or a trade through from start to finish, collaborating with risk, operations and legal teams along the way.”
One deal saw him preparing materials that were presented in meetings with senior executives, including the Head of Commodities and Global Markets, providing real time exposure to how experienced leaders manage risk.
“Macquarie has a very open culture, and that access to senior management to talk things through leads to collaboration in the office.”
Haseeb’s manager also encourages him to forge connections with people across divisions and global offices, including the fund finance team in Japan, giving him increased exposure to Asia.
He also credits his senior managers with inspiring and supporting him in his pursuit of hobbies and interests outside of work.
“When our Chief Operating Officer found out I had started running and had an interest in completing a marathon, he volunteered to make training plans for me,” he says. “I ran the Philadelphia half marathon and managed to achieve a personal best in the race.”
One of Haseeb’s biggest takeaways to date is to stay open-minded to any opportunities that arise, whether formal or informal.
“Macquarie is not shy to give credit when it's due and encourages improvement when things go wrong,” he says.
“I’ve been amazed by the number of people who have taken an interest in mentoring me, or have willingly offered their market experience or expertise or supported me in my ongoing work with the Pride ENG.”
“I really enjoy my team and the work I do,” he says. “I find a lot of joy and inspiration here.”
