Opportunity
The €1 billion Blankenburg Connection is a key infrastructure project in The Netherlands. By improving the roads and accessibility between Rotterdam and its port, the connection is expected to contribute to economic growth and plays an important role in the execution of the 2009 Masterplan Rotterdam Vooruit.
The design includes resilience to growing flood risks, with a 950 metre tunnel below the Scheur River that crosses the area’s main flood protection dam. Macquarie Capital worked with the local authorities to meet strict guidelines and reinforce existing flood prevention infrastructure against future water level rises.
Approach
Acting as sole financial adviser, debt arranger and majority sponsor, Macquarie structured an innovative hybrid funding solution and liaised between a large group of local and international banks, the EIB and fixed rate lenders to arrange a debt package at a competitive price.
