Macquarie Group’s GEC event series brings together leaders in industry, finance and policy to discuss the challenges, opportunities and progress in the global transition to net zero.

GEC25 - London

Our GEC 2025 London event focused on future of the energy transition in the US and Europe, the role of cross-industry partnerships in overcoming tough decarbonisation challenges, and the impact of renewables and storage capacity on the grid.

The energy transition remains a pivotal topic in 2025

Opening the event, our CEO, Shemara Wikramanayake highlighted that the energy transition will continue to reshape our global economy and society long into the future. Shemara highlights how Macquarie has continued to evolve its approach and is now increasingly investing via its fiduciary strategies, to help meet the evolving needs of our clients, communities, and governments.

What’s next for the energy transition in the US?

David Zwillinger, Co-Founder and CEO of leading renewable energy company, DESRI, joined Mark Dooley, Global Head of MAM Green Investments, to discuss DESRI’s remarkable growth and its ability to adapt to the complexities of the energy transition. Zwillinger’s insights offer a glimpse of what may lie ahead for the energy transition in the US.

GEC24 – Sydney

Our third GEC event of 2024 took take place in Sydney, where leaders in industry, finance and policy came together to discuss key trends and opportunities in the transition to a low-carbon economy in Australia and around the world.

The road to 2030

The CEO of Origin Energy, Frank Calabria, and Santos CEO Kevin Gallagher joined Macquarie Group CEO Shemara Wikramanayake to discuss the importance of continued investment in renewable energy, storage solutions and decarbonisation technologies in order to achieve emissions reduction targets by 2030 and beyond.

Farming the next generation of clean fuels

Rachel Palumbo, Global General Manager, Seeds, Nufarm, spoke with Macquarie’s Kate Vidgen, Global Head of Industrial Transition and Clean Fuels, about the growing interest in biofuels and the significant opportunity for Australia's agricultural sector in producing feedstock. 


GEC24 – New York

Our second event of GEC24 took place in New York during Climate Week. The discussions focused on the importance of public-private collaboration in unlocking capital to make progress on the energy transition, and the leadership of Brazil as the host of the G20 and COP30.

Enabling investment in the energy transition

Ajay Banga, President of the World Bank Group, joined Macquarie Group CEO Shemara Wikramanayake to discuss the pressing need for investment in the energy transition within emerging markets, and the World Bank’s target of dedicating 45 per cent of all investments towards climate and energy by 2025.

Developing financially viable renewables at scale

Ricardo Mussa, CEO of Razíen, discusses the enduring opportunities in core climate solutions like renewables, as well as exciting innovations in clean fuels with Macquarie Group CEO Shemara Wikramanayake.
