Insight summary

GreenWaste, an underlying asset of the Macquarie Private Infrastructure Fund, is contributing to conscious circulation of resources and materials throughout their life cycle helping to avoid the emissions associated with landfill disposal.

In 2022 alone, GreenWaste diverted over one million tonnes of organic waste from landfill, which included more than 500,000 tonnes of yard trimmings, food scraps and other organic material1. This waste diversion practice supports the continuous circulation of resources and materials throughout their life cycle to help avoid the emissions associated with landfill disposal.

As the sustainable waste management landscape evolves, in tandem with California’s regulatory environment, GreenWaste is well positioned as a key player to contribute to efforts to recover, repurpose and reuse more of Northern California’s existing materials.

Organic waste in landfills is one of the biggest sources of methane emissions in the United States2. In California, it is estimated that organic waste – such as food scraps, yard trimmings, paper and cardboard – makes up half of what is sent to landfill in the state3. Underscoring the scale of the issue, California’s recent Bill 1383 aims to reduce methane emissions by diverting food waste and other organic materials from landfills.

GreenWaste, a vertically integrated resource recovery and recycling company in California, has been playing its part in diverting organic waste away from landfill and processing it into reusable products and fuel sources.
