In a world where the demand for healthcare is growing faster than supply of healthcare providers, the integration of advanced technology is becoming increasingly important. Although surgery has evolved significantly over the last 200 years, there’s still a long way to go. High complication rates partnered with a huge population still lacking access to basic surgical care, presents a promising outlook for the largely untapped robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) industry and a number of significant investment opportunities.

In 2020, nearly one million robotic-assisted surgeries were performed in the U.S. alone1, and this number has continued to increase. Robotic-assisted surgeries are revolutionising surgical procedures with their minimal invasive nature. The precision of robotic arms reduces risks and leads to faster recovery times and shorter hospital stays, enabling better patient outcomes. Additionally, for surgeons, surgical robots facilitate increased capabilities, greater consistency, and ultimately lead to happier surgeons.

Despite these advantages, the healthcare sector is yet to fully embrace and implement surgical robots on a large scale. The robotic-assisted surgery market could hit US$14billion globally by 20262, creating the potential for a promising growth opportunity for investors.

In this short video, Des Armstrong, Walter Scott Investment Manager, discusses the benefits of robotic surgery and the significant potential for this technology to improve the healthcare industry, especially with the enhancements of data and AI.

Watch time: ~3mins

Intuitive Surgical is thea global leader in robotic surgery systems used to facilitate minimally invasive surgery; by assisting in surgery with very small incisions and high magnification. The da Vinci system, designed and manufactured by Intuitive Surgical, demonstrates its precision by peeling a small grape and stitching it back together, showing how it is used for precision care during procedures while minimising damage to surrounding tissue.

Arguably, one of Intuitive’s greatest advantages over its peers is in the enormous amount of data it has accumulatedIntuitive Surgical has accumulated an enormous amount of data over more than 25 years. This includes everything from the raw video feeds of surgeries performed to which instruments are used for what and for how long, as well as the movements of the instruments and camera over time, as and when a surgeon uses an instrument and the precise wrist angle of their hands. There is even data available on the interactions between instruments and the tissue. With more than 14.2 million procedures performed to date across the da Vinci systems currently in use, the number of possible data points are almost infinite, and the integration of robotic with digital surgery becoming even more apparent.
